Official Scouting Report

  • 3BPosition Projection

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Rodriguez showed some feel for the game, especially defensively and on the mound. His feet worked well in the infield, he took proper angles to the ball and did a good job of reaching a square fielding position. Hands tended to be a little late and were inconsistent as a result. DP feeds were good, and throws across the infield were solid. At the plate, he setup square and showed some rhythm to hit - especially in his hands. He flashed bat speed when his back elbow stayed loose and lower. His stroke was level, line drive type. Lower half can rotate more, tended to use more arms and upper half. On the mound, he threw strikes with fastball and curveball, and mixed in a few change ups. FB was up to 80, and CB was mostly upper 60s with solid action - he went right after hitters with these two pitches. Delivery was balanced, and his arm worked well. Could get more velocity with more complete lower half and glove side action. Overall, a solid all around player with a good approach to play the game.

07/29/2012 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament Abner continues to show solid abilities in the IF and at the plate. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date at 7.50. Feet are active / aggressive as he attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he presents well out front. Throws display accuracy / carry across the diamond through a short arm action. At the plate, he shows a strong base and loads well. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with the baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best he can be.

10/19/2011 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic - 2011 Abner is a 3B/2B with an accurate arm across the diamond. Defensively he has decent hands and fields the ball well out in front of his body. Abner's defensive skills should continue to develop as he learns to take better angles on ground balls and get in his fielding position earlier. At the plate, he has a compact and short stroke that allows him to be very direct and consistently square up the baseball. His offensive abilities will continue to grow as he learns to relax and trust his hands so they can work through the hitting zone. With two years of high school baseball remaining, Abner has the opportunity to continue to develop and prepare for the next level.

09/04/2011 - College PREP - Azusa, CA Abner is an athletic 3B/2B that will graduate in 2013. Feet are active and aggressive as he attacks groundballs while playing through with his body. Hands are soft, clean, and sure as he presents out front displaying a well above average glove action. He reads balls well off bat, taking proper first steps and flashing range as he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and carry across the diamond. Offensively, Rodriquez continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a short / direct path. He shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. With 2 years to further develop, Abner has the makings to be a special type player as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
