Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • CPosition Projection

10/21/2012 - College PREP - Rochester, NY Alex continues to improve in his game. At his latest tryout he improved in several areas. He ran his fastest 60 time to date, running a 7.62. Behind the plate, he lowered his pop times through a quick/clean exchange, throwing down to second in 2.22. Offensively, he gets his lower 1/2 through helping to create pop off of his barrel. He remains balanced and hits line-drives. Kovacs continues to work on his game and still has another year to polish up on his tools.

12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2 Kovacs displayed similar abilities as he we had previously seen in Rochester, NY. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 70-74 mph with arm side run on a slight downhill plane. Changeup has improved now showing slightly above average with running action and decent feel for. Breaking ball displayed 10/4 shape with gradual break. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.4 range - Alex's pop times will get better through a dedicated long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength. Offensively, Alex shows a line drive swing path with potential to be a solid hitter at he continues to develop. A strict strength and conditioning program will elevate his game. Alex showed a sincere passion for the game and was very coachable in Pirate City. Only a 2014 grad, he has the body and attitude to develop into a solid college prospect.

01/15/2010 - Vero Beach Spring Training & Competition - 2010 Kovacs jumped his top end fastball velocity four mph since we last saw him, up from 70 to 74 mph. He did a good job of pitching to contact, was around the zone with his fastball and secondary pitches. His delivery was solid for the most part, did a good job of reaching a balance point and stayed quiet and under control. Needs to avoid tendency to fly open with his front side, will help him improve rotation on his breaking ball and can help him hide the ball a little better from hitters. At the plate, he showed some bat speed and potential for improved power as he fills into his long and lean frame. Needs to work to stay closed with his front side in order to allow the barrel to work through the hitting zone longer. Defensively, he featured good arm strength and was able to carry his throws on line very well. Can work to stay more on the balls of his feet, and in more athletic positions to play the ball. Overall, has great upside on the mound - has a great young frame to develop into, and shows solid pitches and a feel for pitching to build on as he matures physically. Improved his 60-yard dash from 8.34 to 8.24.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
