Official Scouting Report

08/19/2017 - College PREP - West Harrison (NYC), NY Alex increased radar velocity on the mound and his delivery showed well during his last workout. Velocity was clocked at 69 MPH and delivery grade improved to 45. Alex works in good pace on the mound, he repeats his delivery, and he lands in a square position. He separates on-time, lands in a proper length, and competes in the zone with his pitches. At the plate, Alex stays behind the ball, he swings in good rhythm, and he can spray to all fields. He makes square contact through a level swing plane.

08/04/2016 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training & Tournament at Historic Dodgertown Alex showed as an athletic and hardworking outfielder. Defensively, he displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as he works proper angles in tracking down balls. Glove action is soft / sure as he presents hands well out front. He works to get behind balls and plays through well. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows some sinking action. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with gradual break. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. Only a sophomore now, Alex has a good base to work with and we expect him to continue to improve, given his work ethic and approach to the game, over the next few years.

06/26/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Troy (Albany), NY Alex continues to progress on the diamond. This RHP works to a controlled balance point and has smooth separation. Arm is loose as he works his FB in and out - now topping out at 67 mph. He repeats and gets good extension on his follow through. In the OF, Alex is aggressive taking good angles to work into position behind the fly-ball. He secures it with soft hands and has a clean exchange to throw. Continuing to develop his arm strength will aid in his develop both on the mound as well as in the OF. With the bat, this righty shows quiet/simple actions with good balance. He swings on-time and squares the ball up consistently. Only a 2019 grad - Roath is a hard worker who has time to build strength and progress in his skill-set.

07/24/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Roath continues to show progressive play in his baseball abilities on the mound and at 1B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 60-65 mph. Changeup is best off speed pitch, as he maintains arm speed, showing a feel for. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with late break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as builds more arm strength and finishes his pitches more and with more direction towards his catcher. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. He works to square balls up with defensive grade improving as he presents hands more out front and increases foot quickness while showing more aggressive actions to play through the ball. At the plate, hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Working on timing and not dropping his hands will help Alex to gain more bat speed as he gets older. Mental makeup is a plus as he works hard and is very coachable.

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 Alex is a young two-way player RHP/1B. He shows a great desire to pitch and is extremely comfortable on the mound. Defensively Alex keeps his chin down on groundballs allowing him to see the baseball into the glove, and to track the baseball well. He also displays okay hands in the field working them low to high through the baseball. At the plate Alex tracks the baseball into the hitting zone well, keeping his head still throughout the entire swing. He shows a great middle/opposite approach at the plate. On the mound Alex showcases well with this ability to get outs, filling the zone and working the knees with three pitches. He attacks hitters and is not afraid of contact, he pitches to contact well controlling all parts of the strike zone. He keeps a good pace on the mound controlling the speed of the game, and also controlling the running game. Alex shows a good presence on the mound, with good feel for pitching and a high level of confidence.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
