10/17/2010 - College PREP - Scranton, PA Andy is a RHP with a tall, broad frame that is well suited for his position. Delivery is sound as he gets to a solid balance point with eyes remaining on target but needs to work on keeping his head quiet as he releases the baseball. He throws across his body with his body cutting upper half off to the plate as he needs to work more in line to the plate. Arm strength is solid as he topped out at 84 mph. Fastball shows a range of 78-84 mph on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Off speed pitches are average and need further development to be quality pitches at the next level. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with loose spin. Changeup shows average feel for but lacks command and movement. His stock will rise quickly with some instruction and adjustments on the mound. Hughes has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
