01/18/2013 - Arizona National Spring Training A.J. is a strong leader behind the dish who can get it done both offensively and defensively. As a catcher A.J. is a strong receiver that any pitcher would like to throw to. He sticks the ball, centers himself well and is semi-direct with his body. Blocking A.J. gets it done, but would improve by loosening up his body and quieting his shoulder movement. A.J. throws with a short arm action from a low 3/4 arm slot. If A.J. used his lower half more and stayed in line with his hips he could be even stronger and more accurate on his throws. At the plate A.J. is solid with a athletic stance, good stride and load, and balance throughout the swing. In the swing he gets his lower half thru with good hands and bat path. If A.J. let the ball travel more and created better extension at contact he would add more power to all fields. Overall A.J. is what coaches look for in a catcher, a good leader who has potential both behind the plate and at it. As a young 2015 graduate A.J. has time to improve by smoothing out his mechanics and adding some strength and speed to his game.
