03/29/2015 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Austin continues to work on his skills. This RHP works through simple mechanics and a repeatable delivery. FB continues to top out in the upper 70's as it has slight run and will get in on the RHH's. He works his FB to both sides of the plate and throws it for strikes. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape with gradual break. Working to stay on top of his curveball will help to add sharper action. With the bat, this RH swinger shows an open stance with rhythm in his hands. He engages his lower 1/2 and connects with strength, driving the ball to all parts of the field. Austin will toe the rubber and challenge hitters in this his senior season.

09/28/2014 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Austin is an athletic, well built, RHP who will graduate in 2015. On the mound, Austin has a clean arm action through a consistent release point. He separates on time, lands in a square position, and he throws a heavy 79 MPH FB. A better finish and more extension on his pitches will result in better mound effectiveness. At the plate, Austin has a square set-up, he swings in good rhythm, and he utilizes his lower 1/2 well. He has good bat speed, and displays pop potential in his stick. If Austin can widen his base, level off his swing, and throw his hands more directly to the ball, hitting can get better.

09/20/2014 - Pitching & Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Commuter Austin is a lengthy pitcher who shows the ability to control the strike zone with his fastball. He displays a 3/4 arm slot, with a good delivery and fluid arm action. Austin shows the ability to throw 3 pitches effectively filling the strike zone consistently with the fastball and curveball. He needs to continue to work on locating his changeup. Austin also needs to continue to work on his stride, he tends to over stride making it difficult for him to get through his pitches and extend. Lack of extension is going to limit movement on pitches as well as cause the baseball to be left up in the zone.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
