Official Scouting Report

06/17/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Austin showed similar abilities in Omaha as he has done in previous workouts. He is a strong, athletic player with a good set of skills. In the OF, Austin gets good reads off the bat and he tracks the ball well. He can make the tough play look easy, and he delivers the ball accurately with life to his target. Added arm strength will only help Austin continue to improve. On the mound, Austin has a smooth arm action and compact delivery. He has a fluid release point, good front side lead, and is effective down in the zone. Austin has good knowledge of the zone, and with improve command, and work on his off-speed pitches, mound effectiveness can get better. At the plate, Austin has a balanced approach and strong / quick hands. He puts the ball in play and has pop in his bat. Overall, Austin is a physical player with good baseball instincts.

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Austin participated in the UA Preseason All-America as both an OF and Pitcher, and currently projects best in the OF. Austin is a fit, strong, athletic player with good hands and feet. Austin has life in his arm, and gets carry when he throws downhill. He reads the ball well off the bat, and makes plays on balls hit his way. Austin's abilities can improve by playing through the ball more, and quickening his exchange. On the mound, Austin has good balance, direction to the plate, and a quiet head. He pitches to contact, and with added arm strength, speed, and extension, abilities on the hill can improve. Offensively, Austin has good balance and bat speed. He stays closed, has a level swing, and puts the barrel on the ball. Getting his foot down sooner, and loosening his actions should help Austin further improve hitting grades.

10/14/2009 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2009 Kerns has really improved his best abilities and is now a class 3 player. Arm strength has improved to above average showing life, carry, and accuracy on his throws with his hands and feet working well together in getting rid of the baseball quickly. He takes proper routes and angles, displaying range in tracking down balls in the OF, improving defensive abilities to well above average. At the plate, Austin continues to shine, improving hitting abilities and power to well above average through an aggressive approach. He has strength in his swing, displaying leverage as the baseball explodes off his bat when centered. He will hit and hit with power at the next level as he was 4 for 10 with a 2B at the event.

08/30/2009 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Austin is a two-way player in the OF plus on the mound with an athletic frame that is well suited for his positions. Currently, he projects best in the OF for the next level. Foot speed is near above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time. He utilizes his quick feet well in tracking down balls in the OF through proper routes and angles. He works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. Defensive abilities are near above average in the OF. Arm strength is solid average and he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities are solid average with near above average power through a balanced approach. He flashes bat speed and works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 74-78 mph. Changeup shows average feel with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with loose spin and needs further development to be a quality pitch at the next level. Austin has potential in the OF and at the plate and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he improves.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
