08/03/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 1 Simmons showed similar above average abilities as we had previously seen in Kennesaw, GA though his arm strength has improved in the OF. His throws showed accuracy and more carry this time around. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in tracking down balls in the OF through proper routes / angles. Offensively, Austin continues to shine through a solid setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and he shows gap to gap power when he centers the baseball. Grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He is smart player that shows plus instincts for the game. He was able to make quick adjustments during his time at the event, and we expect him to continue to improve in the future with hard work.

06/05/2011 - College PREP - Atlanta, GA Austin is a solid, athletic OF that will graduate in 2013. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.00 60 time. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls in the OF as he works to get behind and plays through with momentum to his target. Throws are consistent but getting on a long toss program will aid in building more arm strength with carry. Offensively, Simmons shows an open stance but squares up through his load. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a short, direct level swing path. He works to keep hands inside and through the ball at contact, displaying extension. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. With 2 years to further develop, Austin has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
