Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

04/15/2018 - College PREP - Greensboro, NC Austin is a speedy SS/RHP that continues to improve his game. At shortstop, Austin shows good body control using his feet efficiently and covering ground to make plays. He gets into a square fielding position as he presents his hands early. Attacking and playing through the baseball could allow him to make more plays and will let him to use his body's momentum to add velocity on his throws. Austin shows a clean exchange into a long arm action (OH arm slot) but changes arm angles when he needs to. He shows a quick release with good accuracy to his targets, throwing the ball with carry on a line. At the plate, Austin shows a gap-to-gap type approach. He has a balanced, athletic set up and a short, square stride. He shows a good load but has the tendency to bar out. A smaller hand load could improve barrel accuracy and timing. He shows a smooth rhythm and a good center balance. He also shows a short, direct swing path as he makes consistent contact with the ball. Austin could improve his power by utilizing more of his lower half. On the mound, Austin shows good, consistent mechanics, throwing a FB, CB and CH from a high 3/4 arm slot. His pitches have a lot of movement and will receive a higher rating when he learns to control them. His fastball shows a good sinking movement and will gain more velocity through a long toss program. Austin's curveball has an 11/5 shape with sharp, late break and his changeup shows natural tail. Austin is working with good tools and is a projectable prospect.

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Austin is a hardworking, coachable 2B/RHP prospect who graduates in 2019. In the field, Austin works around the baseball and presents his glove doing a nice job fielding the baseball in a square position. He gathers himself nicely leading into a long, loose arm action throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. Austin plays with momentum through the baseball producing online, strong throws. Offensively, Austin has a tall, square stance with a centered balance. He takes a good load with fluid rhythm and a short, square stride. Austin has a direct, on-plane swing path producing consistent contact. He has a good idea of the strike zone and works the count. On the mound, Austin pitches with good tempo and repeats his delivery. He has a balanced, on-time motion throwing with a quick arm action. He extends through his release and stays square to home plate with the proper stride length finishing with his chest over his front knee. Austin has good sink on his fastball and medium break on his curveball. Overall, Austin is a projectable prospect who has ability on both sides of the ball.

10/02/2016 - College PREP - Charlotte, NC Austin is a tall, lean 2B/RHP who will graduate in 2019. At 2B, he takes good first steps in working to get around balls and plays through well with his body. Hands are soft / sure but will benefit by presenting more out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive approach. He makes consistent contact with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 71-75 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape with gradual break. He slows arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters. With 3 years to further develop, Austin has potential with time and room progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
