01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Austin continues to show as a top prospect at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft/sure and he showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Feet/hands work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy/carry (90 mph velocity) on his throws. He moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. At the plate he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick (95 mph exit velocity), generating bat speed through an aggressive swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus and he has strength in his swing with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, this lefty has a 2 pitch arsenal in which he keep hitters guessing. Fastball showed a range of 85-87 mph. Breaking ball displays 3/9 shape with across break. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches.

11/03/2018 - 2018 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures Texas Austin continues to improve each time we see him, and still has quite a bit of upside. He put an impressive mix of raw tools on display at the UA Baseball Factory Futures Texas event; 6.88 in the 60, 92 mph raw arm strength, 96 mph exit velocity - all on a 6'5"/198-pound frame. At the plate Austin has natural rhythm and stalks pitches with a hanging leg kick that he coordinates with a subtle hand hitch. When everything is on time his quick hands generate bat speed and he does damage. He has developing power to the pull side that will continue to show itself. Austin is athletic and a solid 1B with a feel around the bag and sure hands. On the mound he has a repeatable delivery and has good tempo to both his delivery and his overall approach. His fastball continues to jump on hitters and his change is thrown with good arm speed and induces weak contact or swing-and-misses. Austin's third pitch is a breaking ball with 2-plane break that he buries well on RHH's back foot. Overall, Austin continues to be a legitimate 2-way prospect with a very high ceiling.

11/04/2017 - 2017 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures Texas Austin is a talented young 2020 2-way prospect (LHP/1B) with tremendous upside. On the mound his projectable 6'4", 195 pound frame produces a delivery that is deceptive to hitters. The ball jumps out of his hand and seems to get on top of hitters quickly. He is aggressive with his fastball and when his delivery is in sync it appears that he reaches his velocity with ease and there is more in the tank. Austin's best secondary pitch is a change that has some late sink to it. He also throws a curve that has 1/7 shape. As a position player Austin swings the bat with authority. He has some moving parts that get him loaded followed by a good, aggressive move to and through contact. He generates good bat speed leading to some pull-side power. In the game he went 2-3 with a single and a double. Austin is also very capable at 1B where he has dependable hands, a good feel around the bag and plenty of arm when making throws. Overall, this 2020 prospect is an exciting player to follow for the next few years.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
