Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 12-14) Ben is a lean and thin OF/LHP. In his time in Arizona, he listened to and respected his coaches, and proved to have a high aptitude in making quick adjustments to his play on the field. Defensively in the OF, he worked aggressively to the ball, displaying strong footwork, and the ability to work under and through the ball cleanly. Arm plays well for the position, as he took a proper crow hop after fielding the ball, gained ground towards his target, then tucked his glove into his body after his throw. Offensively, he sprayed the ball to all fields through a tall setup. He took an on time stride and loaded his hands well, lower 1/2 was involved in the swing, and bat speed was good. Throwing his hands directly at the ball, to avoid casting his barrel, will help with power to all fields. On the mound, he featured a mid 50's fastball from a high 3/4 arm angle, and a 12-6 curveball, which showed some late break. Mechanically, he showed a simple delivery which allowed him to repeat well and throw good strikes consistently. Overall, Ben is a talented young player who shows a very bright future in this game.

12/04/2016 - Interactive Video Program - McCook (Chicago), IL Ben is a young, 2-way player at the LHP/OF position. In the OF, he's aggressive as he tracks down fly balls. He presents his hands out in front as he makes on line throws to his target. On the mound, this lefty delivers from a Hi 3/4 arm slot. He throws a 3-pitch mix (FB,CUT,CH) always keeping his eyes on target. With the bat, Ben tracks the ball well into the hitting zone. He strides on time as he takes hard cuts to the ball. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Quicker footwork
2. Clean exchange to throw
3. Stay behind the ball
Pitching
1. Loose arm
2. Stronger frontside
3. Long toss
Offense
1. Develop a load
2. Bat speed
3. Lower 1/2 drive

06/05/2016 - Interactive Video Program - River Forest (Chicago), IL Ben is a L/L 2-way player as a LHP/OF. On the mound, this lefty has a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works to keep his eyes on the target and repeats his delivery well. FB tops out at 53 mph. Cutter has 2/8 shape with gradual break. In the OF, Ben hustles to track down fly-balls hit to his right and left. He has a clean exchange and makes accurate throws into his target. Offensively, Ben shows a balanced setup with rhythm to load. He swings on a level path and looks to drive the ball back up the middle of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. More lower 1/2 drive
3. Command
Defense
1. Footwork
2. Transfer/exchange
3. Routes/Angles
Offense
1. More lower 1/2
2. Contact points
3. Swing path

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
