10/10/2010 - College PREP - Bristol, VA Ben is a young OF with an athletic frame that is well suited for his position and shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Feet are active but needs to work on taking better routes / angles in working to get behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. He is aggressive with his approach on ground balls, playing through well. Arm slot is ' as he must get on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength and carry on throws. He had a sore/hurt arm at the event. Offensively is where Rife shows best. He starts open but squares stance up, maintaining balance through the swing. Hands are quick working directly to the baseball through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off when centered. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. With 2 years to further develop, Ben has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
