05/17/2009 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Brandon is a young SS with a small, average frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.07 60 time. He needs to utilize his feet more in coming to get and playing through ground balls with his feet and hands. He makes the routine plays showing average defensive abilities in the middle of the infield. As he learns to play through the baseball with his feet and hands, it will allow his glove action to be presented more down and out front. Arm strength is average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry on throws. At the plate, Velez has average abilities and power at the plate. He tracks the baseball and shows a feel for the barrel to the pull side. Swing path gets long creating a pull type swing. Hitting grades and power numbers will improve with instruction and adjustments at the plate. Brandon has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
