Official Scouting Report

  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

01/12/2018 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Brendan is a coachable, hardworking player that is also a great teammate. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls but needs to square up and play through balls more with his body. Range will increase as he continues to improve foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a crouched setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 48-50 mph. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. We look forward to seeing what Brendan has in store for the future.

10/21/2017 - FDI Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (14-18) Brendan is a coachable, and hard-working player that made several adjustments to improve his skills during the Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend. At the plate, Brendan has an athletic stance. He creates rhythm in his hands, loads into the drive position on time, and uses the whole field. Staying balanced through contact will allow him to back the ball up and use his lower half. Brendan also needs to continue to attack the inside part of the ball and get extension through contact. Brendan will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

07/11/2017 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Brendan is a two-way 1B LHP who graduates in 2020. As a first baseman, he showed good fundamentals fielding the ball out in front with soft hands. His throws were accurate and his arm action was short. On the mound he threw just a fastball and showed solid mechanics towards his target. Added size and strength will help Brendan get stronger and add velocity. At the plate, he showed a quiet approach and utilized his lower half well to spray line drives. Overall he showed good knowledge of the game and a solid base of fundamentals. Being only a rising sophomore, Brendan has plenty of room to grow and develop and it will be exciting to watch him grow.

01/30/2016 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Brendan is a young, developing LHH that showed a hard-working approach at the Hitting ATW. Starting from a square set up he works through a soft stride with the lower half and will benefit from developing an activated load with hands to activate the launch position. Utilizing the lower half of his body in his swing will generate greater bat-speed for Brendan and also allow for greater extension through contact creating more line-drive results. Colvin showed the ability to make consistent contact and with years ahead of him to improve, he will be able to get the most out of his abilities through continued hard work.

08/13/2015 - Baseball Factory Select Training at the Under Armour All-America Game Brendan is a young player who works hard. As a LHP, Brendan throws with confidence, pounding hitters inside with a strong feel on the bump. He pitches to contact, manages the running game well and shows positive upside. As he gains strength in his legs and loosens his arm action, stock on the mound will continue to rise. At 1B, Brendan is an active fielder that attacks the ball with efficient footwork. He tracks the ball into his mitt and makes the plays. Continuing to develop his footwork around the 1B bag will help improve his skills defensively. Offensively, he hits from an open stance, allowing him to see the pitch right out of the hand. He gets his backside through to the ball with signs of future pull side pop. As Brendan continues to mature and get stronger, he will see his baseball skills take a leap for the better. A 2020 grad - he still has a ton of time to develop.

06/14/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Williamsville, NY Brendan is a young (2020 grad) L/L 2-way player as a LHP/1B. On the mound, this lefty throws a FB & CH from a low 3/4 arm slot and loose arm action. He works to a controlled balance point, maintains level shoulders and works in-line toward the plate. He has good control and works to throw strikes consistently. FB ranges from 40-44 mph while changeup has slight run. At 1B, Brendan shows a good ready position and moves well into a square fielding position. He is aggressive and comes to get the GB fielding it cleanly. With the bat, this LHH shows a balanced approach with good rhythm to load. He takes an aggressive hack and squares the ball up. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following:

Pitching
1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. More glove-side lead
3. Stay on top of FB
Defense
1. Backhand
2. Glove presentation
Offense
1. Increase bat speed
2. Lower 1/2 drive

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
