  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

01/16/2015 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Brenden competed as both a LHP & 1B at the Under Armour Baseball Factory Pre-Season All America Tournament. On the hill, he topped out at a new high of 82 MPH with his FB that had run, spun a 2/8 CB from 67-70, and showed feel for a CH with tail at 69-72. Mechanically, the southpaw was sound and repeated his delivery enabling him to control to his pitches. At 1B, he made plays with efficient feet and a sure glove and threw with the proper footwork and arm stroke. Offensively, he hit from the ground up with a strong base and delivered the barrel on a direct path to contact. He was loose with his actions and stayed in the middle of the field in his approach. All in all - Brenden continues to show growth in his tools and in his athleticism.

11/16/2014 - National Tryout - Germantown (Memphis), TN Brenden continues to show as a LHP/1B with potential at both positions. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 78 mph. Fastball showed a range of 75-78 mph. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with tailing action. Delivery is sound and repeatable allowing his arm action to work well to the plate. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft /sure as he consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate, hands are quick, generating bat speed through an aggressive approach. He shows a feel for the barrel with ball jumping off the bat, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will increase as he utilizes his lower half more.

02/16/2014 - National Tryout - Monticello, IA Brenden showed increases in all aspects of his game, in his most recent Baseball Factory outing. Offensively, he showed loose actions and a strong launch - which lead to solid contact. He remained balanced throughout the swing and displayed good hand/hip coordination throughout. Defensively, he fielded with soft hands in front and made plays with ease. He demonstrated maturity around the bag - being patient to stretch. On the hill, the southpaw threw three pitches for strikes - topping out 2 MPH faster than his last outing (77 MPH). He remained fluid with his actions and repeated his delivery with easy arm action. Overall - Garza continues to project, and with another two seasons will make himself into a sound prospect for the next level.

11/08/2012 - Baseball Factory Training & Competition at Pirate City In Brenden's first Factory event he showed increases in many of his previous grades. On the mound, the lefty threw three pitches for strikes with his fastball topping out at 75 MPH, and his change-up being his best off-speed pitch with some run. He gets to a good balance point with a nice tempo, separates on time and displays great arm action. He maintains good composure and has a sound finish. Brenden would benefit from using his legs more, staying in-line, and controlling his body. His CB can be cleaned up in more concentrated bullpen sessions, so he gains more confidence with the pitch. Defensively at 1B, he has decent footwork around the bag, decent hands, feel for short hops. He shows some pre-pitch movement and is a physically big target. Brenden needs to work on getting lower in his fielding position, get his hands out in front and wait to stretch until he sees the flight of the baseball. Offensively, he has some rhythm within his swing, has quiet actions and he lands softly on his front foot. He is patient and displays some strike zone awareness. He is a spray type hitter that needs to shorten up his swing, keep his head down at contact, and be a little more aggressive with the swing. Overall, Brenden has a the tall/long pitchers frame, great mound presence, and is a worker that will be a solid LHP within the next couple of years.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
