Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

07/17/2010 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Brent is a long, wiry, 2-way player that played OF and RHP during his time at Team One West. In the OF, Brent tracks the ball well and works to get behind the ball. He plays through the catch and has some arm strength to his target. If Brent can quicken his feet and exchange, and lengthen his arm action, defensive grades can further improve. On the mound, Brent pitches to contact and shows to be effective. He pitches are in the zone, uses the inner 1/2 of the plate well, and he has good A/S run with his pitches. More leg drive and added arm strength will help mound effectiveness get better. At the plate, Brent has a quiet approach, good levers, and good bat speed. He has good hands, a short to long swing, and he can hit to all fields. If Brent can improve his load, and drive the away pitch better, we could see solid offensive numbers get even better.

05/17/2009 - College PREP - Phoenix, AZ Brent is a young two-way player in the OF and on the mound with a tall, thin, and athletic looking frame that shows future projection as he continues to fill out and physically mature. Currently, he projects best in the OF where he shows off his athletic abilities. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.15 60 time. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet in taking proper routes and angles in tracking down balls in the OF as he works to get behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. Defensive abilities are solid average in the OF. Arm strength is slightly above average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength and raising velocities. At the plate is where James shows the best displaying above average abilities with well above average power. He works to keeps hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. Bat speed is present and he shows a solid feel for the barrel displaying gap to HR power. On the mound, fastball shows arm side run. Changeup is best off speed pitch showing a plus feel for with solid fade. Breaking ball displays 11/7 shape with loose spin. He needs to work to stay on top of breaking ball, developing a consistent release. Stock on the mound will rise as more overall arm strength is developed. With 2 years to develop, Brent has potential and the makings to be a solid collegiate player as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
