01/25/2015 - College PREP - San Diego, CA Brian is a LHP who has a projectable frame (6'0"/180). On the bump, he has a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot and loose/clean arm action. He gets good glove side lead and works downhill toward the dish. FB shows run & sink as hitters will have a difficult time squaring up. Breaking ball has 2/8 shape with late break. Change-up compliments his FB well with late run (66-69 mph). He works both sides of the plate and throws strikes, attacking the zone. Continuing to develop a more consistent release point on his breaking ball will help to improve it's effectiveness. With the bat, this LHH has a balanced approach with patience. He works back into a strong loaded position with good bat leverage. He swings on a level path with bat speed and hits line-drives. Increased power potential is there with more extension through his finish. Coffey is a reliable arm that will throw strikes and compete when he toes the rubber.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
