Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Cupa continues to show as a two-way player, projecting best in the OF for the next level. He displays a loose arm with accuracy on his throws. Offensively, hands work through the baseball at contact as he utilizes all fields. Balance is maintained throughout his swing. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 72-76 mph with average off speed.

09/13/2009 - College PREP - Azusa, CA Brian is a two-position player with a solid arm and quick feet in the outfield. He comes through the play aggressively. His actions need to loosen and he can quicken his release as well. At the plate he gets loaded up and has a good, wide base. He uses the whole field effectively. Some dip to his backside, and he can improve rhythm between top and bottom halves. Barrel drags through the zone a bit. On the mound, we saw his velocity jump 3mph from his last workout. Run on the fastball is nice, and he showed tight spin on his slider as well. Delivery has balance and direction and he repeats it. Lower half works well and he separates on time. Needs to continue to work on strength, conditioning, and arm strength. Improvements in overall athleticism will impact every area of his game positively.

06/13/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Cupa lowered his 60-yard dash time from 7.37 to 7.26. On the mound, he was around the plate with his pitches and did a good job of competing in the strike zone. His fastball topped at 76, up one mph from the 75 we saw in May 2009. His breaking ball was similar to what we saw before, while his change had good action and was thrown with good feel at times. Can work to get more on top of his fastball, needs to drive it downhill better and needs to use his lower half to drive down the slope of the mound. At the plate, he hit from a solid setup and showed some bat speed at times. Can work to shorten his swing, and on letting pitches on the outer half travel deeper. His outfield arm strength was much improved, though he still projects best on the mound.

05/17/2009 - College PREP - Phoenix, AZ Brian is a young LHP with a tall, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Delivery is near above average displaying solid balance and works direct to the plate with plus tempo. He shows an easy repeatable delivery that allows his arm action to work free and loose away from his body. Arm strength is near average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. Fastball shows sinking action on 2 plus plane, creating tough angles on hitters. Changeup is best off speed pitch showing above average while displaying a plus feel for with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 2/7 shape with loose spin and flashing late breaking action. Cupa has plus command off all his pitches and his stock will rise quickly as more arm strength is developed.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
