Official Scouting Report

  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

04/25/2010 - College PREP - Cedar Hill, TX Briar made significant strides in a number of areas since we have last seen him. From a speed standpoint, he improved his 60 yd time and his home to first time. His arm grade from 3B climbed from a 42 to a 48, as he showed carry and accuracy across the diamond. His body plays low to the ground defensively and his glove stays out in front. He occasionally stands too tall to throw which slows his momentum. Offensively, he improved his power grade from a 42 to a 45 as he showed some opposite field pop. His hands work direct to the ball without too much wasted movement. We would like to see him gain more power from the use of his lower half, as his legs tend to stay rigid and do not positively affect the swing enough right now. On the mound, he continues to show good balance and arm action, an indication that he has more velocity in the tank. He did not increase the 81-82 mph fastball we have previously seen, but his change up showed some more pitchability, as it was consistent with run and sink. More drive from his lower half could also give him a velocity jump. Overall, it was a good showing with tremendous increase in certain areas.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Patterson continues to show solid play in his baseball abilities. On the mound, he attacks hitters working both sides of the plate, throwing strikes with all his pitches. He holds runners well and works better out of the stretch. His fastball velocity at Pirate City topped at 79 mph, though we have seen him 81-82 mph in a previous workout. His foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, and is now a 7.30 runner. Defensively, he displays good arm action at 3B and throws from a good arm slot. His footwork and positioning are also solid, though he could use the lower half more in his throws. At the plate, he makes consistent contact through a solid setup with a line drive approach. He is an athletic player who is very coachable, and we expect him to improve with two years of high school baseball remaining.

12/06/2009 - College PREP - Cedar Hill, TX Briar is a solid, young 2-way player with ability. On the mound he has a good idea, gets on top of the baseball, and he has good control. His 4-seam and 2-seam FB both have movement, and his CB has 12-6 shape with tight spin. If Briar can get more extension on his pitches, and "finish" them, we could see more velocity and his stock on the mound rise. At 3B, Briar has good footwork, arm action, and works with good tempo. He gets rid of the ball quickly, but needs to avoid rushing, and lowering his arm slot. Offensively, Briar is an aggressive hitter who keeps his head on the baseball. He is able to work the ball to all fields, but needs to incorporate a load, and work to keep his swing level. Briar is a talented 2-way player that should only improve as he grows and matures.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
