Official Scouting Report

07/13/2012 - 2012 Team One South Showcase At Team One South, Caleb displayed the ability to maintain solid mechanics on the mound, along with a good idea on how to manage the running game without taking away from his performance. His abilities on the mound should continue to develop as he learns to find a consistent point, over the rubber, where he can gather himself before making his move to the plate. As a 2013 graduate, Caleb has the opportunity to continue to develop his skills in preparation for the next level.

01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Smith improved his foot speed as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.10. Defensively, he is fundamentally sound and plays aggressively but projects best on the mound for the next level. Arm strength is a plus with fastball showing a range of 82-85 mph on a downhill plane. Breaking ball shows downward break with tight spin. Changeup is near average needing further development to be a quality pitch at the next level. He is very aggressive with his fastball but needs to throw his secondary pitches more. At the event, he threw 4 quality innings.

01/15/2010 - Vero Beach Spring Training & Competition - 2010 Smith was the top pitching prospect, and among the top overall prospects at this event. He topped at 85 mph with his fastball this time out, a one mph jump from what we saw before, and had good life on the pitch - sat comfortably around 82, certainly advanced for a 14 year old pitcher. His breaking ball flashed depth to its downward break, but he was unable to consistently get his release point far enough out front this outing. He needs to work on controlling his delivery and arm action from his balance point through release - tended to rush out and open his stride leg and front hip, and broke his hands too late. This combination got his upper and lower halves out of synch, and forced him to rush his arm through its backside arc in order to catch up - his control suffered as a result, along with his feel for his breaking ball. Has loads of natural ability to work with, giving every reason to believe he can improve his mechanics. At the plate, he showed a short and quick stroke along with some present gap power. Can work to relax his hands and arms, tended to get rigid and mechanical - needs to remain in athletic positions to take advantage of athletic ability. Defensively, he featured a strong arm from an over top slot. Footwork is biggest area for improvement, and may move him from shortstop over to third base or even to the outfield. Seems to fit the mold of a corner player better in any case, arm strength and offensive potential are his biggest assets. Overall, a talented young player with two-way potential as a college prospect.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
