06/23/2018 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Catarino is a well-rounded SS/2B prospect who plays the game hard. In the field, Catarino plays with fluid footwork and covers good ground getting around the baseball. He presents his glove and fields the ball in a square, athletic position. Catarino has a clean exchange leading into a loose arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. He plays with momentum through the baseball towards his target showing consistently online throws across the diamond. As a right-handed hitter, Catarino has an open setup with a centered balance. He has smooth rhythm with a short, square stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. Catarino has an on-plane swing getting good separation with his hands. He lands the barrel to the baseball producing square contact. Catarino is a contact type hitter who has the ability to spray the ball to all fields. Overall, Catarino has a feel for the game and a desire to improve giving him a bright future on the diamond.

02/03/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Parker (Denver), CO Catarino continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date at 7.28. At SS, defensive abilities are now outstanding as he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are aggressive as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and he presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on feeds / turns of the double play. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate he has improved his hitting / power potential through a balanced setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach.

07/14/2016 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 Catarino is an interesting young prospect with good skills on the field. He is a solid fielder at short with the ability to make all of the routine plays, the hallmark of a middle infielder. He does a good job of working his backhand to gain momentum to his target. He also shows off an accurate arm across the diamond with an efficient arm stroke. Getting up on his toes to field will speed up his feet and increase his range to make even more plays. At the plate, Catarino has a still head to hit with in line direct towards the pitcher, keeping his eyes behind the bat. He does a good job of making hard contact and putting the ball in play. Catarino is a young prospect who we look forward to watching grow.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
