Official Scouting Report

  • OFPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Challis is a tall, lean, athletic, OF with a solid set of baseball skills. In the OF, Challis has a quick 1st step and he tracks the ball nicely. His glove is in a good spot when he catches it, and he works well through ground balls. Challis has a long, loose arm that is accurate to his target. Added arm strength through long toss is recommended for Challis to improve defensively. At the plate, Challis has good balance and bat speed. He has a level swing path, hits against his front side, and makes good contact. Better extension to and through the ball, along with more use of his lower 1/2 should help hitting number further improve.

10/14/2009 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2009 Willson continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities as he shows as a two-way player in the OF and on the mound. Currently, he only projects in the OF for the next level. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. At the plate, he made adjustments as the week went on and has potential to be a solid hitter at the collegiate level.

07/29/2009 - Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament - 2009 Challis continues to show solid play in his baseball abilities. He only showed in the OF where he showcased his outstanding arm strength. He displays life in his arm with throws showing on line. Hands and feet work well together in getting rid of the baseball quickly as he keeps his body behind throws on release. At the plate, Willson did not show as well as we have seen in the past but the potential is present. He was 3 for 11 with a 2B and 4 BB as he shows a solid eye at the plate. The best part of Challis is his positive attitude and hard working effort, with an athletic upside.

05/30/2009 - College PREP - Kearns, UT Challis is a two-way player as an OF and on the mound as a RHP with a lean, tall frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best in the OF where he shows off his athletic ability. Foot speed is near above average as indicated by his 7.15 60 time. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in taking proper routes and angles in tracking down balls in the OF. Feet are active and aggressive in working to get behind ball, playing through with momentum to target. His hands and feet work well together through the fielding and throwing process displaying outstanding defensive abilities. Arm strength is well above average showing life, carry, and accuracy into his target. At the plate, Willson has outstanding hitting abilities with well above average power. He shows a square, balanced approach that allows his hands to work quickly and directly to the baseball, generating plus bat speed. Swing path is level and he shows a solid feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He will utilize all fields as he works to keep hands inside the baseball. On the mound, abilities are average to slightly above average and he needs to concentrate his work ethic in the OF and at the plate. Challis has plus potential with the makings of a special type player at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
