06/16/2011 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 1 Shaw showed as a two-way player at the event in the OF and on the mound. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with the makings to be solid player at the next level. Defensively, he utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in getting great jumps to run down balls in the OF. He takes proper routes / angles and works to get behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. Arm strength is outstanding through a loose, long arm action. Throws display life, accuracy, and on line carry into his target. Offensively, Chase shows an athletic setup and makes good contact as he will put the ball in play. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he shows a feel for the barrel with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. Swing path gets long due to arm bar created in his load with power showing best to the pull side. He will benefit by working to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. At the event, he was 3 for 10 with a 3B. On the mound is where he may project best with 3 well above average pitches. Fastball shows a range of 81-85 mph with late life. Slider displays tight spin with solid 2 plane break. Changeup shows above average feel for with arm side run. He attacks hitters throwing strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. Arm action is long, loose, and quick as it works well to the plate. He is a hard-nosed kid that played well through some injuries during the week.

03/06/2011 - College PREP - Plainfield, IN Chase is a tall and athletic two way player graduating in 2013. He has quick feet, as he ran a 60 time of 6.97 At the plate he has a tall, square stance with a good load and a short stride. He has good balance throughout his swing and makes good use of his lower body. He shows great bat speed with good extension and is on time with getting his front foot down. At times he pulls off the ball a bit which causes him to take his head off the ball. Overall at the plate - Chase shows plenty of potential. Defensively in the outfield, he makes good angles to the ball and has good life and accuracy on his throws. He needs to work on staying aggressive to the ball with a lower approach and try to raise his arm slot a bit to get on top of the ball better. On the mound, Chase has good control of both his FB and CB with repeatable mechanics. He stays in line to his target and keeps his eyes his target at all times. He needs to develop his off speed pitches a bit and needs to work on staying taller on his backside to help with better extension out front. Chase is young and is definitely someone to follow for the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
