Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

09/26/2010 - College PREP - McKees Rocks, PA Chris showed improvements in his game during his workout in Pittsburgh. In the INF, Chris takes good angles to the ball, he gains ground well, and shows good life in his body. He has quick feet, he makes plays, and he has a decent exchange. Chris throws with accuracy to his target, and if he can play in better rhythm, and field the ball further out in front of his body, fielding grades can get better. On the mound, Chris improved his velocity from 72 to 81 MPH and showed some life in his arm. He repeats his delivery, keeps his eyes to his target, and he competes in the zone. Chris can continue to improve his mound effectiveness if he can finish off his pitches better, get on top of his CB, and add velocity. Offensively, Chris has good balance and good bat speed. He has a proper load, he can spray to all fields, and shows decent pop in his bat. Offensive numbers can rise if Chris can level off his swing and continue to add physical strength.

06/24/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Chris is a two-way player at SS plus on the mound with an average frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature, adding muscle strength. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 6.80 60 time. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get the ball, but needs to play through more, presenting hands down and out front. Throws show some carry with accuracy through a loose, smooth arm action but will benefit by getting on a long toss program. Offensively, Montanez shows a solid, balanced setup that allows his hands to work short to the ball but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 68-74 with slight cutting action. Off speed pitches are below average, needing further development to be quality pitches at the next level. Chris has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
