Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3BPosition Projection

10/12/2014 - National Tryout - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Claude only showed at 3B at the event but has improved his baseball abilities. Defensive grade has improved, now showing solid average abilities as he displays clean / smooth actions. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. He moves well laterally, flashing range and works to square balls up. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he comes get ball while presenting hands more out front. Arm strength has improved as he topped out at 84 mph with throws displaying carry and accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, he has improved his hitting / power grades through an open / athletic setup. Hands are loose, quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered.

07/30/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Newell showed as a 3B/RHP at the event and has promise at both positions. At the plate, power grade has improved through an athletic setup. He has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off his bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed with hands working through a level path. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. Throws are accurate and he throws well on the run but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 75-79 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with gradual break and he maintains arm speed on his change, displaying cutting action. Stock on the mound will improve as he builds more arm strength, throws more strikes, and develops better off speed stuff. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and has the work ethic to take skill set to the next level.

06/15/2014 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Claude is a tall, lean RHP that will graduate in 2016 and has room to continue to fill out. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work loose and free to the plate through a 3/4 arm slot. Arm strength is slightly above average as indicated by his top velocity of 80 mph. Fastball shows a range of 77-80 mph on a slight downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and shows as a quality pitch when he stays on top. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program and works to throw more strikes. With 2 years to further develop, Claude has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
