10/17/2010 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Clayton is a young, athletic, 2-way player that Catches and Pitches. He currently projects evenly at both positions as he enters his Junior year. Behind the plate, Clayton has a soft glove, playable feet, and he moves well laterally. He blocks the receives the ball well, and has a clean exchange from glove to hand. Clayton has a short / loose arm action and delivers the ball with good carry to his target. Defensive grades can improve by loosening his lower 1/2 and widening his base. On the mound, Clayton has a smooth, easy arm action and he works in good rhythm. He gets solid extension, uses his legs properly, and he throws a heavy ball with late life. Clayton's off-speed pitches compliment his FB well, and if he can sharpen his control and keep his front side closed, mound effectiveness can get even better. Offensively, Clayton has an open stance, short stride, and good balance. He has average bat speed, quick hands, and he makes hard contact. Clayton has a level swing, he hits the ball hard to the pull side, and he drives through the ball well. Better use of his lower 1/2 will help solid numbers get better.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
