Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

06/03/2018 - College PREP - Folsom (Sacramento), CA Colby is a strong, talented RHP/SS graduating in 2019. In the field, Colby displays a pre-pitch routine with agile range and shows a good feel for backhand plays. He shows a low fielding position and makes clean exchanges into a 3/4 arm slot, changing arm angles when needed. Colby could see improvement by attacking ground balls harder and presenting his hands out front of his body when making plays. On the mound, Colby shows a four-pitch mix (FB, SL, CB and CH) from a 3/4 arm slot. He shows solid, repeatable mechanics with a smooth delivery to the plate, tucking his glove and getting extension upon release. His FB shows arm-side run and ranges from 77-81 mph, SL has an 11/5 shape and ranges from 64-69 mph, a CB that ranges from 62-65 mph and a CH that shows run, ranging from 60-66 mph. Colby could improve accuracy and velocity by implementing a throwing program to his training. At the plate, Colby shows good potential through a line drive approach. He displays an open set up with a short stride and a back-side hand load. Rhythm is smooth as he keeps his balance center and stays through with his lower half. Bat speed is fast as he makes hard contact through a direct swing path. Colby can improve offensively by keeping his head on the ball and letting it travel a little longer. Colby is a good player that shows a lot of potential everywhere on the field. With another year of fine tuning to his game, he can play at the next level and make an impact.

12/27/2016 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Colby is a tall, strong two-way prospect who is currently more advanced as a second baseman. He shows off a very strong arm for his frame and age, reaching 81mph on the gun and translating that into games turning strong double plays. He does good work pre-pitch to get in an athletic ready position, which extends his range. He goes to the glove side and backhand with ease and shows quick hands to transfer and release the ball on time. On the mound, he has a bulldog mentality, attacking hitters and never giving in to an at-bat, while seeming to get stronger throughout his outing. He shows an effective out pitch in his high 60's, 12-6 breaking ball with depth. Working on his fastball command will allow him to work ahead of hitters and put them away more efficiently with his breaking ball. At the plate, he has a consistent approach and swing, using his lower half to generate power. His actions are smooth in the box and his quick bat leads to hard contact with potential for big power as he continues to grow into his frame. Colby is an intriguing, young prospect who we are excited to continue following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
