Official Scouting Report

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Colton participated at Pirate City as both a Catcher and RHP, and again showed similar skills as 11/09. Colton has a tall, lanky frame and works hard behind the plate. He is a big target and works to get low. Colton receives the ball well and will need to strengthen his arm, and quicken his feet to further improve behind the plate. On the mound, Colton has an effective FB with sink. His mechanics are decent and he lands softly on his front foot. Colton will need to loosen his arm and actions in order improve mound presence and pitchability. Offensively, Colton has a good set-up, decent rhythm, and he swings at strikes. Offensive numbers can further improve by relaxing at the plate, keeping his front side closed, and keeping his hands high. Overall, Colton is a young player with a good build and skills to build on. With normal growth, maturity, and strength, we should see Colton improve.

11/05/2009 - Pirate City Select Training Elbrecht continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities as blocking and receiving skills are now average. He displays a tough mental and physical approach in his abilities behind the plate. At the plate, he makes consistent contact but has some mechanical flaws with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. He showed on the mound for the first time with fastball displaying a range of 69-71 mph with running action as he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. Breaking ball is average displaying downward tilt with early break. Stock on the mound will rise quickly as more arm strength is developed. Currently, projects best behind the plate for the next level.

10/18/2009 - College PREP - Indianapolis, IN Colton is a tall, lean catcher. He is narrow in the stance but stays down well. Throws are on line and mechanics are consistent. He throws from a 3/4 slot and his exchange needs to be quicker and have more rhythm. Would like to see him come through instead of standing up to throw. Tends to stab at the pitch when receiving. Needs to soften up the glove some. On the block, his narrow stance keeps him from really getting down effectively and hurts his body control. As he widens out, he will be in control and cover more ground. He does create good angles on the block. At the plate, he puts the ball in play with a level swing path. His stance is tall and narrow which keeps him from getting much out of his lower half. Steps to hit—needs to get his front foot down sooner. Pull-oriented hitter. He is young with room to get stronger and improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
