01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Colton is a lean, athletic 2014 dual-position player. At the Under Armour All America Pre-Season Tournament, he showed well both on the mound and in the infield. At shortstop, he has good footwork, the ability to throw from multiple arm angles, and mature double play feeds and turns. He plays through well and has life and carry on his throws. Arm can loosen some, but he has a nice feel overall. With the bat, Colton does not get cheated. Loads up well and has some power to the pull side. He collapses at times which hurts his barrel accuracy. On the mound, his delivery is balanced, but he lands slightly closed which causes him to throw across his body some. His arm stroke is short and he has to rush it at times. He throws all three pitches for strikes and gets outs. He can clean up some minor mechanical issues, but he has some life in his arm and two seasons ahead of him. Solid looking prospect at both spots.

12/19/2012 - Pirate City Christmas Camp and Tournament Colton showed well both on the mound and in the INF during his time in Pirate City. On the hill, Colton has a quick arm action, good balance, and he repeats his delivery. He works quickly, throws strikes, and he FB touched 86 MPH. He has a pitcher's body type (long arms, lanky, etc) and very quick actions with a nice tempo. He also showed a nice breaking ball with 11/5 action and good depth. The biggest area for him to work on is maintaining consistency from the windup to the stretch. At SS, Colton has sure hands, quick feet, and he makes plays consistently. He has a quick arm with accuracy and carry to his target. He shows the ability to make the big play with his athletic frame. He can work on playing lower and more out front. Offensively, Colton has an aggressive swing, he keeps his hands inside the ball, and he gets proper separation. He makes solid contact and has pop in his bat. He needs to make sure to keep his hands back and not dive--he has a quick enough bat that adjusting his timing should be easy for him to do. He has potential as a two way player and is a player to watch over the next couple of years.

10/14/2012 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Colton is a tall, lanky, and athletic RHP/SS that will graduate in 2014. Currently he projects best at SS for the next level but has an upside on the mound as well. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 7.37 60 time. Feet are quick, athletic as he works around balls and plays through well with his body. He moves well laterally, displaying range in the MIF while presenting soft / clean / sure hands in making all the plays. Throws are accurate with life and on line carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, Pate continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level path to and through the ball at contact. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered with power numbers improving as he learns to load and use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 79-84 mph with late life and explodes on hitters. Breaking ball is a quality pitch that will get outs at the next level, displaying 11/5 shape with tight spin and sharp breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a solid feel for with slight arm side run. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. With 2 years to further develop, Colton has the makings to be a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
