01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Cruz continues to show steady progress on the diamond. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls, playing through with momentum to his target. Throws display life, accuracy and on line carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work inside the ball utilizing all fields. On the mound, he displays a sound / repeatable delivery, working in line and on time allowing his arm to work loose / free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 74-78 mph with slight arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. He throws a slider that resembles his breaking ball. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

06/17/2016 - USA Baseball 17U Championships Cruz is a very coachable and hard working 2-way player who showed well at the USA Baseball 17U Championships. In the OF, he works lightly on the balls of his feet and covers a ton of ground with speed. He works behind and through the ball, gaining ground toward his target. As a hitter - he has a balanced/comfortable setup with quiet actions. He takes a hack at pitches in the zone, driving the ball on a line. Working to consistently stride square will allow him to utilize his full lower 1/2 - resulting in increased power. Cruz also has the ability to get on the mound and compete. He has a FB & CB that are both around the zone and are thrown for strikes. FB tops out at 78 mph while showing sinking action. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with good action when snapped off out in front. He works the ball down in the zone and looks to get GB outs. This 2018 grad is a versatile athlete who has skills with still time to progress.

04/24/2016 - College PREP - Phoenix, AZ Cruz is a lanky, athletic OF who has a bright future on the diamond. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 60 time of 6.95. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying tremendous hitting abilities with well above average power potential. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work to and through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and works inside the ball, utilizing all fields and gap to gap pop. In the OF, feet are active as he attacks ground balls, displaying clean hands. He takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind fly balls, playing through with momentum to his target. With 2 years to further develop, Cruz has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
