07/27/2012 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 5 Flaherty continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.57 runner. Feet are active as he moves well laterally and attacks ground balls, and presents clean hands well out front. He has improved his defensive grades to solid average. Throws are accurate but needs to continue to build arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting / power grades have improved as well through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus and he stays through the ball at contact, creating extension. At the event, he was 2 for 6. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude with good instincts for the game.

11/06/2010 - Accelerated Hitting Weekend (Commuter) Cullen is a very young, Coachable player. From the left side, he lets the ball travel, swings in good rhythm, and he makes good use of his lower 1/2. He has a rhythmic swing and good lower 1/2 as well from the right. Cullen is better mechanically from the left side, but shows potential from both sides. From both sides, he can improve by being more consistent with his stride and load, to set himself up for better drive out of his lower body.

08/05/2010 - Vero Beach Pro Select Training and Competition - 2010 Cullen is a young player with potential both defensively and at the plate. He is a switch hitter, natural from the right side of the plate. His stroke is better from the left side at this point - it has more looseness and his bat path is such that he creates a lot of line drives. From the right side, he worked to improve his separation and the strength is his body position upon stride landing. Has potential to keep handling the bat from both sides of the plate, especially since he is strong left handed where he will see most of his at bats. Defensively, he showed active feet to get in front of the ball and did a good job with his exchange. Can work to improve his fielding position - rear end lower, hands more out front with softer arms. Can also work to improve his arm angle on throws, especially important for a left side infielder to get his elbow up and create better backspin on his throws. Overall, a solid young player with natural ability to develop as he gets stronger and more physically mature.

03/28/2010 - College PREP - Washington (Pittsburgh), PA Cullen is very young, SS that will graduate in 2014. Defensively, Cullen makes plays on balls hit his way and moves well to his left side. He has a clean exchange, fields the ball in rhythm, and he fields the ball nicely for his age. A better pre-pitch routine, a looser arm, and added arm strength will help Cullen improve defensively as he physically grows and matures. Offensively, Cullen has good rhythm and an easy stance. He makes consistent contact and squares the ball up well on the barrel of the bat. Hitting numbers can improve if Cullen can avoid spinning off the ball, quicken his bat, and level off his swing. Overall, Cullen has a good idea of the game for his current age.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
