04/19/2009 - College PREP - Stockton (Sacramento), CA David is a two-way player as a SS and RHP with a thin frame that shows projection as it continues to fill out. Currently, he projects best as a SS where his defensive abilities are well above average. Foot speed is near average and more suited for 3B at the next level. He needs to get on a speed agility program to improve foot quickness for the middle of the infield. Fielding actions are fluid and he is not afraid to get dirty. Arm strength is well above average through a live, loose arm action. He makes throws from all angles, displaying life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. At the plate, hitting abilities are near average with below average power. Hands are loose and quick but he has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate. Hitting grades will improve quickly with instruction and adjustments at the plate. Power numbers will increase as more overall body strength is gained. On the mound, Watkins has average to near average abilities. Fastball shows some arm side run as he stays on top of the baseball, locating down in the zone. Off speed pitches are near average to average and needs further work to be effective at the next level. David has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of some college coaches with his defensive abilities, especially if his hitting comes around.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
