01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Derek continued to show improvements in his game at the UA Preseason All-America. At SS, Derek has good hands, feet, and he uses his legs well. He has a quick transfer, a short arm stroke, and accuracy to the bag. Derek has a soft back hand and his throws have life and carry to them. Defense can further improve if Derek can work through the ball more thoroughly and not stop when fielding. Offensively, Derek has a good set-up, quick hands, and a level swing. He keeps his head on the baseball well and has good barrel accuracy. Derek has gap power and a very good overall idea at the dish.

11/22/2009 - College PREP - Salem, OR Derek is a thin, athletic, SS with solid tools. His footwork, hands, and arm action are excellent, and he fields the ball low, in an athletic position. Derek has a quick release, solid back hand, and is great at turning the double play. Offensively, Derek has very good bat speed, barrel accuracy, and he makes good use of his lower 1/2. He attacks the baseball aggressively, and the ball jumps off of his bat. If Derek can widen his stance, and lower his elbow, his hitting could get even better. Overall, Derek is a very good all around player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
