09/28/2008 - College PREP - Detroit, MI Derrick is a 2B with an average body that shows some projection as it continues to fill out. He shows best at the plate where he has average ability and power. He shows a level path with a solid feel for the barrel to the pull side. Swing path does get long as the barrel gets out around the baseball. He needs to let the baseball travel more to allow hands and barrel to stay inside the baseball and utilize all fields. Power numbers will increase as he learns to utilize his lower half more through the swing, currently anchors backside. Foot speed is below average and he needs to work to quicken feet to play in the middle at the next level. Arm strength is below average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to build more arm strength. Defensively, abilities are near average. Fielding abilities will improve quickly as he learns to come get the baseball, playing through with his feet and hands. Bolster has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
