12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2 Derrick is a coachable, athletic player that played OF and Pitched at the Christmas Camp. In the OF, Derrick showed a quick 1st step, good routes to the ball, and fluid actions. He stays on top of the baseball, his arm action is long and easy, and he throws with accuracy to his target. On the mound Derrick has good size, proper balance, and good direction toward home plate. He competes in the zone and finishes off his pitches well. At the plate, Derrick has quick hands, a level swing, and he makes solid contact. The ball jumps off his bat and he can work the ball gap to gap. Derrick is a Coachable player who showed improvements everyday.

10/10/2010 - College PREP - Baltimore, MD Derrick showed similar skills in Baltimore, as he did at his last workout in West Lawn, PA. He is improved his radar velocity from 74 to 77 MPH and showed decent hands and okay footwork in the OF. Derrick reads the ball off the bat well, works behind the ball, and has a good exchange. He gets on top of his throws, and delivers the ball with a short, consistent arm slot to his target. Defensive abilities can improve if Derrick can become more confident, avoid standing straight up when throwing, and continue to add arm strength. At the plate, Derrick has square set-up, good balance, and quiet actions. He is a strong hitter with a rhythmic swing and a line drive approach. Derrick has quick hands, good bat speed, and a short stroke. We look for Derrick to continue to improve and become a solid Collegiate player.

08/24/2010 - College Prep Super Regional - West Lawn, PA - PM Derrick is tall, stocky, OF who will graduate in 2011. In the OF, Derrick has average hands and feet and he makes plays on balls hit his way. He gets behind the ball well, uses 2 hands, and catches it at its highest point. Derrick has good glove side lead and throws with okay carry to his target. If Derrick can lengthen his arm action, get on top of his throws, and add arm strength, defensive numbers can further improve. Offensively, Derrick has average balance and good bat speed and barrel accuracy. He has a strong swing, he gets his hands through the ball, and makes good use of his lower 1/2. A looser grip, not diving at the ball, and working it to all fields will help solid numbers get even better.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
