Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Donovan continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and projects as a solid two-way player at the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.33. At 3B, feet are active as he works to square balls up and displays soft / clean hands as he makes all the plays. Throws are accurate with life and on line carry across the diamond as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup with quick hands that work through a level swing path. Barrel accuracy is a plus as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 82-86 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and shows potential as being a quality pitch when he stays on top. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a feel for with arm side run. Command / control are a plus as throws strikes with all his pitches and changes speeds well. He has an upside on the mound with plus makeup as he works hard and is very coachable.

11/11/2012 - College PREP - Fresno, CA Donovan is a solid, athletic RHP/3B that will graduate in 2014. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable, allowing his arm action to work loose / free to the plate. Arm strength is well above average as indicated by his top velocity of 86 mph. Fastball shows a range of 82-86 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Off speed pitches are quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. At 3B, feet are active / aggressive as he works to square balls up, displaying clean hands. He needs to play through balls more while presenting hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate, Bertoncini shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with ball jumping off his bat when centered. With 2 years to further develop, Donovan has an upside on the mound and will get a ton of interest from the collegiate coaches with his abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
