Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/SSPosition Projection

12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2 Jones displayed improvements in his baseball abilities and showed at SS for the first time. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level, but he has an excellent athletic frame that makes us think he could be successful at SS as well if he can improve overall speed and flexibility. On the mound, his arm strength has improved as he topped out at 84 mph. His fastball showed a range of 81-84 mph with slight, late sink on a downhill plane. Off speed pitches continue to show potential as being quality pitches at the next level as he continues to improve. He shows a solid mound presence and attacks hitters with his fastball, working ahead. His actions are loose and easy and he gets to his balance point, but he needs to make sure he doesn't throw across his body and if he is going to miss the zone, make sure he does not miss high. Dustin also ran his best 60 time to date but will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the middle infield. Defensively, he moves well laterally displaying range and good footwork. More game experience will help his stock as an infielder. Offensively, Dustin has a level swing path that will continue to improve as long as he keeps his weight back and gets his front foot down sooner. He is very coachable, willing to make adjustments, and always plays hard with a lot of passion.

08/11/2010 - College PREP - Bear (Wilmington), DE Dustin is a young RHP with a tall, lean frame that is well suited for his position and shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Delivery is outstanding showing proper mechanics that allows his arm action to work loosely and quickly to the plate. Fastball shows a range of 80-83 mph on a strong downhill plane. Off speed pitches are solid showing potential to be quality pitches as he continues to develop. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with tight spin but needs to work on a consistent release point. Changeup shows solid feel for with arm side sink. Split finger is his out pitch, showing solid downward movement. He attacks hitters throwing strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well. With 2 years to further develop, Jones has a lot of potential with the makings to be a solid arm at the next level as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
