Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

09/12/2010 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Ethan showed well in the INF and on the mound during his most recent workout in Adrian, MI. He is an athletic, 2-way player with good pre-pitch actions in the INF, and life in his body. He plays in good rhythm, has clean actions, and he throws with accuracy to his target. If Ethan can get his glove down sooner, and not throw against his body, defensive numbers can continue to improve. On the mound, Ethan has good balance and a quick arm. His FB and SL showed improvement, and he is around the zone with his pitches. If Ethan can lengthen his arm action, and use more lower 1/2, mound effectiveness can continue to get better. At the plate, Ethan has balance, bat speed, and barrel accuracy. He keeps his hands inside the ball, shows a line drive approach, and he gets decent extension through the ball. Improved barrel accuracy and added strength will help hitting grades improve.

06/24/2010 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Chizek continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.40 runner. Arm strength has also improved as he topped out at 82 mph on the mound and displayed plus carry across the diamond on his throws. He is a reliable defender who is aggressive to the ball. He starts low and has good range, especially to the right. Offensively, Ethan was 2 for 8 during the event. He showed an aggressive approach, and used the whole field. He has a good base and good hand-eye coordination. He will need to continue to keep hands inside the ball and get his lower half more involved in his swing. In addition to more arm strength he showed an improved change up this time around with good command on that pitch. He has a repeatable delivery and a good body type as well. We could see him helping a college team out in the infield and/or on the mound.

12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Ethan is a strong, athletic player who participated at both SS and RHP at Pirate City. He currently projects better at SS than on the mound, but he still has time to improve his abilities at both positions. At SS, Ethan has active feet and moves well laterally. He gets in good position to field the baseball but needs to break down sooner and present his glove sooner. Ethan is a very athletic SS, and with his athleticism alone should improve his overall abilities in the INF. On the mound, Ethan has a good pace and pounds the zone with strikes. He pitches to contact and also fields his position well. He will need to strengthen his arm and work on his off-speed pitches for Pitching grades to further improve. At the plate, Ethan has good balance and decent bat speed. He has an athletic set-up, and an aggressive and level swing. Ethan is able to center the ball up well but needs to let the ball travel deeper and shorten his stroke for offensive numbers to further improve.

09/13/2009 - College PREP - Adrian (Detroit), MI Ethan is a young two-way player at SS plus on the mound with an average frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level. Foot speed is currently average and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get ground balls but needs to play through balls more with his feet and hands. He shows a low approach but glove action is deep at times due to feet stopping in the fielding process. Defensive abilities are slightly above average in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is solid average showing carry across the diamond. He would benefit from getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, Chizek has slightly above average abilities with average power through a balanced approach. Hands work direct to the baseball, flashing bat speed but he has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate, with grades improving with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 75-78 mph with occasional arm side run. Breaking ball is solid average displaying 11/5 shape and tight spin. Slider is below average and needs work to be a quality pitch at the next level. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches, staying down in the zone. With 2 years to further develop, Ethan has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
