Official Scouting Report

  • 3B/CPosition Projection

08/07/2016 - College PREP - Wilmington, DE Ethan is a big, strong prospect who shows versatility in the field. He shows off natural hitting instincts and is able to spray line drives gap to gap. At the plate, he has a solid setup with smooth actions to load and get his front foot down in time to launch. His bat path is compact and direct to the ball and he keeps good balance throughout his swing to make consistently hard contact. Behind the dish, Ethan is a sound defender with quiet actions to receive and stick pitches. He gains ground on borderline pitches to get more strike calls and his exchange is clean throwing down to second. This kid has good tools and we look forward to watching him make the jump to the next level.

10/04/2015 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Ethan is a 2-way player that projects as a 3B and C. At the hot corner, his footwork is efficient towards the ball with sure hands and a clean exchange. He gains momentum to his target with a simple shuffle side step. Behind the plate, he throws a true ball to 2B with the ability to stay low through the entire throw. Times will improve with more cadence in his feet and arm strength. At the plate, he hits from a strong base with a rhythmic stroke. Becoming more aggressive with the entire plate will allow Ethan to hit to all fields. In all, Ethan has time on his side as he continues to make positive adjustments in his game.

07/23/2015 - Factory Development Institute National Select Program Ethan has continued to make adjustments especially in his most recent outing with Baseball Factory. Behind the plate, he showed solid fundamentals with phenomenal receiving ability. Continuing to work on agility exercises and flexibility in the hips will give Ethan the best opportunity to quicken his throws to second. As a RHH he hits from a square, strong stance with an active lower 1/2. He takes aggressive hacks at the ball with a line drive approach to all fields. Getting his front foot down early and getting extension through the ball will improve his skills with the bat. Ethan has a promising future ahead if with still time to develop.

03/22/2015 - National Tryout - Bowie, MD Ethan continues to work on his game. Behind the dish, he sits in well with flexion and receives with a soft mitt. He has a clean exchange, gains ground toward 2B and puts accurate throws on the bag. At 2B, he has active prep, works quickly around the GB and into a low/athletic fielding position. He is sure handed and can turn the DP quickly. Offensively, Ethan has a balanced setup with simple actions. He likes the pitch on the inner 1/2 and pulls it with pop. Increased power will come with more lower 1/2 drive. A 2017 grad - Ethan still has time to progress his skills.

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Ethan is a strong, solid built 2B/C. At the plate, he displays a square set-up with on-time rhythm while attacking the baseball. He shows pop to the pull side and when Ethan loads his hands straight back, he is consistent hitting to all fields. He got after it day in and day out showing improvement each day in the cage which translated on the field. Defensively, he makes the routine plays at 2B by fielding out in front, and replacing his feet for accurate throws to his target. Moving forward, he should focus his work on lateral quickness to the baseball. Overall - Ethan is a great kid, that enjoys playing the game.

08/04/2014 - College PREP - Wilmington, DE Hurd is a R/R 2-way player (C/2B). With the bat, this RHH shows a balanced approach with a strong base. Barrel delivery is quick as he connects and drives through the zone with extension. Behind the dish, he sits in well and tracks the ball into his mitt. He shows good flexion with active footwork and the ability to move laterally around the pitches in the dirt. At 2B, he is aggressive to come and get the ball. He works from the ground-up and plays through it toward his target. Only a 2017 grad - Hurd has a bright future in the game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
