Official Scouting Report

  • 1BPosition Projection

11/11/2010 - Pirate City Select Training Ethan continues to progress at 1st base. He moves well around the bag, he makes routine plays, and his hands work well. He is an accurate thrower, who continues to show similar skills in game play. If Ethan can quicken his feet, improve his range, and play in a lower, more athletic position, INF abilities can get better. At the plate, Ethan when 1-3 with 2 walks. He has an aggressive approach, a level swing, and he makes contact. He showed good strike zone awareness but needs to improve his set-up and balance, along with work the ball to all fields.

08/22/2010 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY Ethan showed similar skills in Selden as he did at his last workout. In the INF, Ethan is aggressive to the ball and he makes routine plays. He has decent hand and feet and is not afraid to get in front of the baseball. Ethan will need to present his glove sooner, improve his agility, and lengthen his arm action in order to get better. Offensively, Ethan has a good set-up and he tracks the ball well. He has a level swing, can spray to all fields, and he makes okay use of his lower 1/2. Ethan can improve offensively if he can liven his hands, throw them more directly to the ball, and add physical strength.

01/15/2010 - Vero Beach Spring Training & Competition - 2010 Luchs ran 7.45 in the 60-yard dash, very slightly off the 7.42 we saw from him last time. He was aggressive with his feet defensively, worked hard to get in front of balls. Can work to break down into a better fielding position, tended to be a little out of control at his play on the ball - needs to get his glove farther out front and to keep his hands and arms softer. Arm strength has progressed a bit since last time, but he still has room to develop it further. At the plate, he was aggressive both with his swing and his approach to hit. Would benefit from a shorter and more level swing path, tended to pull and lift with big full cuts - must work to let the ball travel, and to stay on top and through contact to develop a stroke more geared for line drives and hard ground balls. Overall, is making progress as an all around player.

11/05/2009 - Pirate City Select Training Ethan is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a SS/1B with small frame displaying some projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is slightly above average as indicated by his 7.42 60. Feet are active but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get the ball - needs to play through balls with his feet / hands. He shows a feel around the bag with abilities improving with more reps. Defensive abilities and arm strength are below average as he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry on throws. At the plate, Luchs has below average abilities and power through a balanced approach. He makes consistent contact, flashing bat speed but has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments at the plate. With 3 years to further develop, Ethan has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
