11/16/2008 - College PREP - Shreveport, LA Ethan is an OF with a small body that does show some projection as it continues to fill out. Foot speed is solid average and has improved since the last time that we saw him. He utilizes his foot speed well in tracking down balls in the outfield. He tries to work behind balls to play through with momentum to target. As he learns to read balls better off the bat, it will enable him to take better routes and angles to get behind. He plays through ground balls well. Defensive abilities are average. Arm strength is slightly average displaying some life and carry on throws. He does need to finish throws with his feet and body, staying behind. At the plate, Rains has slightly average abilities with average power. He keeps hands inside the baseball, almost inside out, utilizing the right side well. Power numbers will increase as overall body strength is gained. Hitting grades will improve quickly with some instruction and adjustments at the plate. Ethan has abilities with room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
