01/22/2023 - National Showcase - Dallas, TX Fernando is a C prospect who will graduate in 2024. Medium frame athletic build and strength present. Behind the plate, he showed quick feet and strong hands. Presents a low target and tracks ball to mitt with ability to stick the baseball. Good direction to second base, with a clean exchange, working into a high 3/4 release point with accurate throws to second base. Arm velocity was up to 82mph and his best pop time was 2.19 seconds. Creates good blocking angles with the ability to smother the baseball. At the plate, he hits from an athletic and closed stance. Square glide step, with looseness to hands, and good barrel control. Showed good extension as he made consistent contact into both gaps with a bat exit velocity up to 77mph. With 2 seasons of continued growth and development, we foresee Fernando having a bright future on the baseball diamond.

06/20/2022 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 (HS) Fernando is an athletic framed RH catcher from Ft. Worth, TX. in the 2024 class. Scouts who worked with him in Omaha talked about his intangibles by stating “he displays solid body language, asks questions about the game, showed the ability to make adjustments and is very coachable”. Behind the plate, he has a quiet set up and soft hands. He replaces his feet well and gets his front foot down prior to release. His arm action is loose and extends from a high ¾ slot. His feeds are accurate and to the bag (2.22 pop). Has solid timing on his blocks and stays centered to control the baseball and recover. At the plate, he demonstrated power potential with 2 2bs’s and 4 hits on the weekend. He gets his barrel on plane with an on-time rhythm and simple load. Working on his speed and flexibility will improve his overall baseball actions and make a strong case for next level play. Fernando is a fine young man with high character and will create opportunities for himself as he progresses on his skills.

03/13/2022 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Highland Park (DFW), TX Fernando is a C in the class of 2024 out of Fort Worth, TX. At C, he sits in a square stance to the plate while staying quiet with his body when receiving. He keeps his thumb underneath the ball with soft hands to present pitches well. On throw downs, he has a clean exchange with a short arm action to allow him to get the ball out quickly and on line. At times, he can extend his footwork with too big of steps instead of having small quick replacement steps. At the plate, he uses a tall open stance with good balance after stride to deliver the barrel on plane to the ball. He works inside the ball which allows him to hit the ball to all fields with square contact. With 2 years to further develop, Fernando has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
