01/16/2015 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Gavin continues to impress on the diamond. With the bat this lefty shows an athletic/balanced approach with a solid base. He works back into a strong load/launch position while creating good bat leverage. Barrel delivery is quick as he connects and shows pop to his pull-side. In the OF, he works light on his feet and takes solid routes/angles. He has a clean exchange, gains ground with an aggressive crow-hop and throws the ball on a line into his cut-off's chest. On the bump, this LHP repeats his delivery well and throws strikes. FB sits mid 80's while showing slight cut. Breaking ball shows to be solid out pitch with 12/6 shape. Gavin is very talented and will play at a high level.

02/02/2014 - College PREP - Houston, TX Gavin is a lean, athletic OF/LHP that will graduate in 2015 with a lot of potential at both positions. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.12 60 time. Defensive abilities in the OF are well above average, displaying smooth/clean actions. He utilizes his quick/athletic feet well in taking proper routes/angles to track balls down. He reads balls well off the bat and works to get behind balls, playing through well, and covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Throws are accurate, with life and on line carry through his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic/squared approach and he tracks the ball well. Hands are quick, and aggressive, working through a level swing path as he generates bat speed and creates extension through the ball. He shows a feel for the barrel and has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. On the mound, arm strength is well above average as indicated by his top velocity of 85 mph. Fastball shows a range of 83-85 mph with cut and sinking action. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Gavin has a lot of plus abilities with an upside on the mound and will catch the eyes of the top collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
