Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Gavin participated at the UA Preseason All-America as both a 1B and LHP, and showed similar skills as he did 6/09. At 1B, Gavin has good hands, feet and makes plays on balls hit his way. He can pick it out of the dirt and he works well around the bag. Quicker feet and a better pre-pitch routine should help Gavin continue to improve defensively. On the mound, Gavin has good mound presence and pitchability. He has a clean arm stroke, and repeats his delivery well. Gavin's hands break on time well and he has good balance and drive to the plate. He works to keep the ball down in the zone and does a nice job attacking hitters and throwing strikes. If Gavin can avoid throwing across his body, and get more extension on all his pitches we could see Gavin's stock on the mound rise. Offensively, Gavin has a simple set-up and a level swing path. His balance is good and he puts the ball in play with some power. Hitting grades can further improve if Gavin can get more extension to and through the ball and by letting it travel a little deeper in the zone. Overall, Gavin is a talented 2-way player with a bright upside.

06/19/2009 - USA Baseball 16U Championships (FL) - 2009 Gavin continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities as he continues to show as a two-way player at 1B and on the mound as a LHP. Arm strength has improved as indicated by his top velocities of 83 mph on the mound. He will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to continue to aid in further developing more arm strength and raise velocities. His abilities on the mound have really improved as he showed as one of the top pitchers on the squad. Delivery is smooth as he works on a strong downward plane creating tough angles on hitters. He keeps the ball down in the zone with all his pitches. Breaking ball is near above average displaying a 10/5 shape with tight spin. Fayard continues to shine with his abilities at 1B and at the plate. He has a feel for his defensive play and has great instincts. Hands and feet work well through the fielding and throwing process. At the plate, he was 2 for 7 with a 2B but hit several balls square on the nose. Gavin is a hard worker with a great feel for the game and still projects best at 1B but has closed the gap with his improved abilities on the mound. He will get a ton of looks from the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

04/05/2009 - College PREP - Metairie, LA Gavin is a strong looking athlete with potential at the next level. Although he also pitches with a balanced delivery and a loose arm with an excellent CH, he is more suited for the field at this point due to hitting and fielding mechanics. At 1B, Gavin has easy actions and great foot work. He throws the ball across the diamond well and can turn the double play. Quite simply, everything works in the field. He is an above average defender. At the plate, Gavin shows a quick bat with power and extension. He tends to pull everything but he stays through the ball and hits everything hard. He has great barrel contact. Gavin is a strong prospect.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
