Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

11/08/2012 - Baseball Factory Training & Competition in Arizona (Ages 12-14) Gavin is a young player who showed good versatility. He is more comfortable at 1B but shows good potential in the OF where he is a good runner with long stride and proper routes. At 1B, his hands are clean, with active feet and good angles. His fielding position is low and athletic. He can work on a quicker exchange on his pivots to second. On the mound, Gavin has a above average arm action, but will need to work on a few things to be more consistent. He uses his hips well and shows a good downward plane when he follows through. He can work on breaking his hands earlier on his separation to allow his arm to catch up to his lower half. If he can follow through consistently and release the ball earlier he will locate down in the zone. At the plate, Gavin continues to stay inside the ball well with quick hands. His shows a firm front side in his lower half but can work on his backside finishing heel over toe. A shorter swing path a stronger lower half will help hitting grades. With another year to develop before high school, Gavin has a good foundation and will continue to improve by focusing on the areas above.

01/28/2012 - Interactive Video Program - San Diego, CA Gavin is a young LHP with a thin frame. On the mound, Gavin has a short, easy arm action, a controlled balance point, and good glove tuck. He has on-time separation, good direction toward home, and he is around the zone with his pitches. Offensively, Gavin has a tall set-up, a short stride, and average bat speed. He makes contact, stays inside the ball, and shows good hand-eye coordination. Overall abilities can improve if Gavin can work on the following.

Pitching
1. Avoid fling open
2. Bend back
3. Lengthen and strength arm
Offense
1. Widen base
2. More lower 1/2
3. Rhythm / timing

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
