07/05/2024 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition (MS) Gavin continued development and growth in baseball is impressive, and he truly seems to have a bright future ahead of him on the diamond. His smooth and fluid actions at shortstop highlight his natural athleticism and understanding of the position. The fact that he actively attacks the ball and plays through it with his body demonstrates a strong fielding mentality. As he works on his foot quickness, it's encouraging to note that his lateral movement and range are improving, which will further enhance his defensive capabilities. At the plate, his loose hands and aggressive swing path allow him to generate good bat speed, and the line drive approach combined with the potential for increased power as he properly utilizes his lower half indicates significant upside in his offensive game. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 51 mph. Fastball showed a range of 48-51 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard, resembling fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and develops off speed pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

02/18/2024 - All-In National Showcase - Atlanta, GA Gavin is a lean, lanky 2B/RHP who will graduate in 2029. At 2B, he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is firm but needs to present earlier and more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 49-50 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 5 years to further develop, Gavin has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
