Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

02/12/2021 - Baseball Factory Opening Day Classic (HS - West) Gavin is a 2023 RHP/OF. Medium frame and athletic build with some strength in frame. Primary right-handed pitcher starts from the stretch only. Belt high leg lift that has slight drop and drive actions down the mound, landing online with consistent direction in the lower half. Throws from different arm angles and competes in the zone. Developing arm speed who throws consistent strikes with the straight fastball at 74-79 miles per hour (up to 81), locating best to the arm side. Shows developing feel for an upper-60 slider that has sweeping action across the zone. Can land the slider for strikes from lower arm angle. Secondary OF with developing footwork and clean glove actions. Throws are accurate and have carry on them to the plate at 84mph. Right-handed hitter that starts from a crouch and open stance. Showcasing developing bat speed with a line drive barrel plane and middle of the field approach. Developing barrel control as well. Good contact guy who is aggressive on the base paths. Three years of continued growth and development will bode well for his career at the next level.

11/06/2020 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition in Arizona Gavin is a coachable OF/RHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during the Select Training & Competition in Arizona. In the field, Gavin gets into an athletic position and fields the ball out in front of his body. His exchange is clean and he gains ground well on his throws, keeping them accurate through his target. Increasing his lateral range can help Gavin make more plays. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a closed stance and rotates his core through well, producing solid line drives. Gavin can barrel up more baseballs by getting his stride foot down sooner. On the mound, Gavin is controlled gathering to his balance point and works with a loose arm. He stays inline toward the plate and finishes with a controlled landing. Gavin shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 76mph with cutting action. Breaking ball sits at 65mph with 10-4 break. Extending through his release more can help Gavin improve his pitch command and velocity. Overall, Gavin is a solid prospect who has the potential to further build upon his skills on the field.

09/13/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Fresno, CA Gavin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At the plate, power potential is well above average through a squared setup. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. In the OF, he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate with carry (81 mph velocity) to his target. On the mound fastball showed a range of 73-74 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with loose spin. H slows his arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters.

09/06/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Stockton (Sacramento), CA Gavin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the OF, defensive abilities have improved as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls but needs to play through more with momentum to his target. Range will improve as he continues to improve foot quickness. Throws are accurate with on line zip (83 mph velocity) to his target. At the plate, he shows an open setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. He can improve as a pitcher by long tossing to build up his arm strength.

07/12/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - San Jose, CA Gavin is a (2023 grad) RHP who has a 3-pitch mix. He works to a controlled balance point, has smooth separation and repeats his delivery well. He has the ability to throw all of his pitches for strikes from multiple arm slots which will keep hitters guessing. FB ranges from 71-74 mph as he works to keep it down in the zone. Breaking ball shows 11/5 - 61-65 mph. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed helping to create deception. As a hitter, Platt shows an open stance getting his hands into a launch position. He takes a hack and has the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field. Getting loaded sooner, engaging his lower 1/2 and swinging with more bat speed will all help to increase his power at the plate. Gavin is a crafty righty who has the ability to give hitters different looks from different arm slots.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
