05/17/2009 - College PREP - Phoenix, AZ Hyrum is a two-way player at SS and on the mound with a thin, athletic looking body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is solid average as indicated by his 7.29 60 and he will benefit by getting on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. He shows solid preps but needs to be more aggressive in coming to get and playing through ground balls. Glove action is presented out front, showing a soft action. Double play feeds and turns are solid displaying slightly above average in his defensive abilities in the middle of the IF. Arm strength is average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further develop more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities are solid average with near above average power. He shows a square stance that allows his hands to work inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered, displaying gap to gap power. On the mound, fastball is straight but locates well to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball is solid average displaying a 12/6 shape with lazy, loose spin. He needs to work on a more consistent release point, staying on top of pitch. Stock on the mound will rise as more overall arm strength is developed. Formo has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.
