Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

05/09/2010 - College PREP - Glen Allen (Richmond), VA Jacob showed in the OF for the first time. Feet are quick and athletic as he takes the proper routes / angles to track down balls. He needs to work in getting behind ball more to play through with momentum to his target. In the IF, he needs to continue to work on playing through the baseball with feet and hands. Arm strength has improved but needs to get on a long toss program. He did not show on the mound at the event.

04/25/2010 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Rion continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities projecting best as a position player for the next level. Defensively, actions and arm strength are better suited for 2B at the next level. Offensively, Jacob makes consistent contact through a long swing path with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 64-68 mph.

07/21/2009 - Cape Cod Training 2009 - Week 3 Jacob is a young, 2012 graduate that shows as a two-way player on the mound and at SS with a small, thin frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.00 60 time. Feet are aggressive in his defensive play in the IF. He needs to play through the baseball with his feet and hands. Glove action is deep, due to feet stopping as body breaks down into fielding position. He is raw and needs a lot of reps at 2B. Arm strength is below average and he must get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities are near average with below average power through a solid setup. He is a aggressive showing a short path to ball. He has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate with grades improving with instruction and adjustments. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 65-70 mph with some tail. Breaking ball displays a 10/4 shape with loose spin and gradual break. With 3 years to further develop, Jacob has abilities with a lot of room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
