Official Scouting Report

06/21/2021 - USA Baseball 17U Championships Jacob is a RHP that is in the graduation class of 2022. He shows off a tall frame and a physical body with additional room to grow. On the mound, he shows good presence and clean mechanics overall. He throws all 3 of his pitches from a high ¾ arm slot. His best pitch is his fastball that was thrown early in the count for strikes in the 88-90 MPH range. Showed feel for an 11-5 shaped breaking ball. Also flashed a changeup that was 80-82 and thrown with good arm speed. Jacob is a talented and physical prospect who should have the chance to compete at the next level.

12/12/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Pompano Beach, FL Jacob continues to show as a top prospect on the diamond. In the OF not many balls get down that are hit his way Transfer exchange is smooth as he zips throws (88 mph velocity) on a line through his target. He has the versatility to play all 3 OF spots effectively. At the plate, he continues to shine. He stands in with a solid/strong base and has fluid rhythm to load. Barrel delivery is short/quick with aggression (88 mph exit velocity) as he connects with power driving to all parts of the field.

09/16/2020 - Pathway AZ Upperclass - 18U Jacob continues to show as a top prospect on the diamond. At 1B, feet are active as he displays proper foot work around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate with zip (87 mph velocity) to his target. At the plate, he shows a tall, squared setup. Hands are quick (83 exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, fastball showed range of 85-87 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes all his pitches.

07/13/2020 - All-In Membership - Daytona Beach, FL Jacob is tall/strong/projectable 2-way player (RHP/1B) who can make things happen. On the mound, this RHP has a 3-pitch mix coming from a loose/free arm acton. He maintains fluid rhythm/tempo and drives downhill, in-line toward the dish. FB cracks the mitt at 84 mph while showing good tailing action. Curveball has 10/4 shape with sharp/late break and tight spin. Changeup shows to be his best off-speed pitch as he throws it with FB arm speed and keeps it down in the zone. At 1B, Jacob shows his athleticism with quick/active prep footwork as he moves into a square fielding position behind the GB. Hands are soft as he has the ability to pick it out of the dirt. As a hitter, this lefty shows a crouched setup with patience, waiting for a pitch he likes. Swing is level as he works to engage his lower 1/2 with some pop to his pull-side. Smith is a talented 2-way prospect who has a ton of upside and a bright future ahead of him in the game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
